Intellectual Property in University Learning and Teaching
Intellectual Property (IP) is a legal concept that refers to creations of the mind—such as inventions, artistic works, designs, symbols, and names—that are protected by laws to grant creators exclusive rights.
When engaging in academic projects, students often need to use images from various online sources, so it is important to properly credit all artworks and images following APA conventions.
Ethical Use of AI
Ethics in AI concern responsible use of the systems of artificial intelligence in concert with human values, societal norms, and laws. Some critical issues concerning ethical AI include:
1. Transparency
Clearly indicate whether or not AI is being used.
There should be transparency about the decisions made by AI systems.
2. Fairness and Non-Discrimination
Bias elimination in AI algorithms so as not to perpetrate injustices based on individual race, gender, age, or other characteristics.
Regular auditing of the AI systems for their equitable outcomes.
3. Privacy and Data Protection
Have personal information collected and used responsibly; comply with basic laws on privacy.
Data gathering should be reduced to the barest minimum and securely stored.
4. Accountability
Accountability from AI decisions to be clearly spelt out through human oversight and responsibility.
Provide avenues for users to challenge or appeal AI-driven decisions or outcomes.
5. Safety and Security
Design the AI systems for safety first: not causing harm to an individual or system.
Protection of the AI systems from misuse, hacking, or other malicious activities.
6. Ethical Use in Education and at Work
AI is to be used as an instrument that helps one learn and enhance productivity, not as an excuse to avoid effort or creativity.
Clearly articulate to students and professionals the implications of resorting to AI with respect to assignments, research, or decision-making.
Ethical use of AI builds trust, allows for inclusiveness, and minimizes a variety of risks coming hand in hand with rapid adoption of this technology.
